Books and Reviews – October 03, 2016

Good morning!

It is hard to believe it is already October!  The mornings here are a little cooler and it is beginning to feel like fall.  GRL Retreat is only 18 days away.  I am so excited.  It will be a time to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

One of the events that I love is the author readings. This event is one that helped me  discover new to me authors.  I first heard Angel Martinez read in Atlanta from her then soon to be released book,  Rarely Pure and Never Simple.  I consider it my gateway book to all books Angel Martinez.   The next time I went to GRL I heard Brandon Witt read from his book Then the Stars Fall.  It was beautiful.   I also heard J.A. Rock read from her book Calling The Show.  I laughed so hard.  She was wonderful.  It is so much fun hearing authors read their books.  I ultimately bought the three book mentioned because of the readings.

I read a lovely short story by one of my favorite authors, Kim Fielding this week.  It had been part of one of the Goodreads M/M Romance Groups Love is an Open Road event in 2015.  She has released it on Amazon for .99 August of this year, and this is where I bought and read it.  It doesn’t state it on Amazon, but Kim Fielding donates all her self-published royalties (including the audiobooks) to Doctors Without Borders.  Even more reason to buy and enjoy the book.  I will be buying the audiobook soon.  K.C. Kelly narrates it and is a fabulous narrator.  He narrates her books The Tin Box and Brute, both of which are on my all time favorites list.

Summary: As the son of a wealthy man, Enitan Javed has spent his life frivolously—drinking, fighting, and making love. But after his father dies, Enitan is unjustly accused of murdering him and is given the harshest sentence possible. Judged irredeemable, he is banished to the Downs. As even young children know, nothing lives in the Downs except demons who delight in torturing the condemned. Brutalized by the men who transport him to his fate, Enitan has nothing left but his thirst for vengeance.

His plummet to the Downs nearly kills him, and Enitan finds himself battered and helpless in a frightening, mysterious land. But many surprises await him there, including a strange man named Rig. And the realization that the demons he must face aren’t at all the ones he expected.

Thoughts:  4.5stars
This is a beautiful story. It captured my heart, held my attention and made me hope for her characters even when I wanted to shake one of them from time to time. Wonderful world building and character development in short story.

I listened to two book by author Santino Hassell.  The first is a collaboration with Megan Erickson.

strong-signal-megan-erickson-and-santino-hassellTitle: Strong Signal
Series: Cyber Love Book 1
Authors: Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell
Narrators: Guy Locke, Eric London
Publisher:  Tantor Audio
Publication date:  September 06, 2016
Format: Audiobook
Length:  8 hours and 19 minutes
Genre; LGBT, M/M, Contemporary, Romance, Erotic, Gamer, Military

I was counting down the months until the end of my deployment. My days were spent working on military vehicles, and I spent my nights playing video games that would distract me until I could leave staff sergeant Garrett Reid behind.
That was when I met him: Kai Bannon, a fellow gamer with a famous stream channel.

I never expected to become fixated on someone who’d initially been a rival. And I’d never expected someone who oozed charm to notice me – a guy known for his brutal honesty and scowl. I hadn’t planned for our online friendship to turn into something that kept me up at night – hours of chatting evolving into filthy webcam sessions.

But it did. And now I can’t stop thinking about him. In my mind, our real life meeting is perfect. We kiss, we fall into bed, and it’s love at first sight.

Except, like most things in my life, it doesn’t go as planned.

Thoughts:  I read this book April 11 – 17, 2016.  Loved this story. Even though gaming is central to the story, it is not necessary that you be a gamer to enjoy the story. I love the online aspect of the relationship and how their relationship progressed offline.  Sweet and sexy.
September 26 – 29, 2016. Listened to the audiobook.  I loved that they have two narrators for the story. They were perfect for Kai and Garrett.

I found two review that reflected my thoughts on the book:

Author Taylor Donovan has this to say: One of my favorite gay romance books in the past three years. Funny, tender, smart, sexy, and heartwarming. Props to the authors for giving us believable characters and addressing the issue of unemployment after military service as well as the dangers, benefits, and rewards of online relationships. Loved it from beginning to end!

I also listened to the third book in the Five Boroughs series by Santino Hassell.

Series: Five Boroughs
Author:  Santino Hassell
Narrator:  Michael Farraiuolo

Caleb Stone was raised on the Upper East Side, where wealth and lineage reign and “alternative lifestyles” are hidden. It took him years to come out to his family, but he’s still stuck in the stranglehold of their expectations. Caleb knows he has to build his confidence and shake things up, but he doesn’t know how, until he meets Oliver Buckley.
Oli is everything Caleb isn’t – risk-taking, provocative, and fiercely independent. Disowned by his family, Oli has made his own way in the world and is beholden to no one. After a chance encounter on New Year’s Eve, Caleb is smitten.
As Caleb sheds the insecurities that have held him back for years, he makes bold steps toward changing his career and escaping years of sexual repression. But for Caleb to take full control of his life, he has to be brave enough to confront his feelings and trust Oli with his heart.

Thoughts:  This story was a bit different from the previous two Five Boroughs books.  Caleb and Oli are from a different background than the previous characters, more the very rich, which seems pretty dysfunctional.  This story explores the characters wants, desires and sexuality.  There is a lot of sex in this book and it is an important part of the characters stories as their experiences have shaped their views on sexuality.  Oli and Caleb couldn’t be more different in their views, or are they?    We get some background for Caleb and Oli, both of whom we met in the previous books.    I was pleasantly surprised that I found myself liking Caleb and Oli and pushing for their happy ending.  Caleb was not one of my favorite characters in the previous books.   Overall I really enjoyed this book, and the secondary characters were intriguing.  I hope we find out more about them in future books.
