Fried Rice, the Rhys Ford way.

I adore Rhys Ford.  Her books are fabulous, she is always posting awesome food pics, reviews, blog tours and lovely artistic photos of men and she is one of the sweetest people I know.  When I saw a post for her fried rice recipe, I thought I would try it. Some day.  It requires patience and no stirring (which I tend to want to do).  Tonight I decided to take the plunge.  I had the basic ingredients, plus I decided to add with shrimp, pineapple, mushrooms and carrots.  I seasoned it with salt, pepper, garlic and cooked it in coconut oil.

It turned out fantastic.  We had five people over for dinner and there are no leftovers. None. Pouts.

But now I have earned my Rhys Ford Fried Rice Master badge.  So I know I can make more.  See:

Mocker of Ravens SPECTR 2, Book 1 – By Jordan L Hawk. —– The Boys are Back!

June 16, 2015,  Mocker of Ravens – SPECTR 2 book 1 by Jordan L Hawk was released.  I was so excited when I found out the author was bringing back John, Caleb and Gray from the first series.  When I found an ARC in my email I was ecstatic!  I devoured the book and then read it again.  I did not write an early review and now I am glad.  The audiobook was released the same day!  I immediately bought it and I spent the day happily listening to the story narrated by Brad Langer.  He also narrates the Complete First Series and it is wonderful.

Caleb has spent the last six months adjusting to life possessed by the vampire spirit Gray. Unfortunately, after the events of Fort Sumter, the other agents of SPECTR view him more as a ticking time bomb than a co-worker.

The one bright spot is Caleb and Gray’s boyfriend, federal exorcist John Starkweather. But John has problems of his own. A supernatural killer is on the loose in Charleston, stealing the hearts of its victims to extend its own unnatural life.

With the help of a rookie agent, John, Caleb, and Gray must find the killer before it strikes again…or before they become the demon’s next victims.

Review:

I was incredibly happy to hear that Jordan L Hawk was bringing back John, Caleb and Gray. I loved the first series. Her take on  paranormal beings is refreshing and creative, her characters well developed and the way she is able to weave her stories together has kept me on the edge of my seat many times.  Mystery, action and romance, sprinkled with humor.

The end of the first series of SPECTR left me hopeful that things would be better for my guys . They are now working together at SPECTR but have a new boss. This guy makes one wish to have Kaniyar back and she scared Caleb.  People still fear Gray, maybe even more so, since the events in the last book in the first series,  Summoner of Storms . It is a struggle for Caleb and therefore Gray, but they keep trying because they have John. (Click the link for my review of Summoner of Storms as well as a summary of the First SPECTR series)

Gray has such a lovely innocence, he is still baffled by what he sees as mortal nonsense and his honesty is endearing. He is powerful, an apex predator among the NHE yet, gentle and caring and trying to navigate the complexities of inhabiting a living body, and the emotions and feelings he experiences through Caleb and being in love.

The introduction of their new partner, Zahira is great. She is a perfect fit for the team.  She is fresh out of the academy, top in her class, strong, intelligent and fascinated with Gray. (I had to laugh at her first meeting with John, Caleb and Gray.)

The story is fast paced and action packed with a creepy new NHE ( Non-Human Entity) for the guys to defeat. It also has the humor and romance that I look forward to in Ms Hawks books, plus I think she may have been dropping hints for things to come in this one. So exciting!

Having read the first series, I have the background on the characters and the evolution of the storyline. I think you could possibly read this without having read the first series but I recommend reading the first series – first.  It will be so much better and well worth the time.

If you are an audiobook lover, listen to SPECTR: the Complete First Series.  Brad Langer narrates it and does a fine job.

Highly recommended!

It’s not the breaking up that kills you, it’s the aftermath.

Ever since his longtime lover decided he’d seen the “heterosexual light”, Matt’s life has been in a nosedive. Six months of too many missed shifts at the hospital, too much booze, too many men. Matt knows he’s on the verge of losing everything, but he’s finding it hard to care.

Then Matt meets Aaron. He’s gorgeous, intelligent, and apparently not interested in being picked up. Still, even after seeing Matt at his worst, he doesn’t turn away. Aaron’s kindness and respect have Matt almost believing he’s worth it – and that there could be life after Joe. But his new found happiness is threatened when Matt begins to suspect Aaron is hiding something – or someone….

4,5 stars Review: I had only read holiday themed stories from this author until a friend strongly encouraged me to listen to this one. She said the story is wonderful and the narration is by Sean Crisden (Who I Love!- great narrator)

I had errands to run and was able to listen while traveling. I found myself lingering in the parking lot and taking the longer routes just to continue listening to the story. Then once I returned home, I donned headphones and tuned out everything but listening to this lovely story. (well, as much as possible) 🙂

First – the story – this is a beautiful story centering on Matt and Aaron.  When we meet Matt he is a mess.  His ex, Joe, who he has been friends with since childhood then lovers, has dumped him for a woman.  Matt is in a downward spiral and on a path to self-destruction.  Enter Aaron.  Matt first meets Aaron in a bar.  He has his sights set on making Aaron a conquest but Aaron gently rebuffs him as he has done with all the other men.  Yet when Matt makes some really bad drunken decisions,Aaron is there to rescue him.  Even though the story is told from Matt’s POV, we still get a good feel for Aaron and the secondary characters.  That said, since it is from Matt’s point of view, Aaron remains a bit of a mystery until late in the book.  This works well because as Matt and therefore myself as the reader, discover more about Aaron, it made me love his character even more.
The author weaves this story so beautifully, intertwining the past and the present, love, loss, and insecurities, new beginnings, hope and healing.

Second – Sean Crisden. His voice for these characters is perfect. He brings them to life and the accents take the reader to the locale of the characters. I am continually impressed with his narrations.

Recommended.

Review:

This is one of the best May/December – really May/October romances I have read in a while. The romance between Aaron, 37,and Malachi,21 is written such that makes it believable. Malachi is a mature 21 year old. He is no stranger to work and responsibility and it is quite a contrast to Aaron’s son Julian. Julian is a spoiled young man that was very difficult to like and there were times I wanted to thunk Aaron for still treating him like a child and not an adult. This was another part of the story that I liked – the storyline about Aaron and Carrie,Julian’s mother, her husband Jeff and Aaron’s parents. The way the teen pregnancy was handled, Aaron being gay (but not openly) and how the various parents reacted and continue to feel about these situations also felt realistic. There are smoking hot scenes between Aaron and Malachi but also moments where we get to see them developing their friendship and insights into why they think and feel the way they do. I enjoyed that the story is told from the point of view of both Aaron and Malachi.

I was pleased with the ending but I would love to know how things turn out for these two in the future.

I love the play on names for the title. I also enjoyed the setting being in central Texas where I’m from.
Growing up doing what is expected, hiding oneself because it is just what one does, then finding that reason to live out loud made for a beautiful, sweet and very sexy story. The angst was minimal.  I love the mix of foodie and cowboy, country life and urban living. The characters were easy to like and I read the story in one sitting because I did not want to put it down.

Review:
This is a great feel good book.
Jody comes from a neighborhood where being gay is not always accepted. To make it worse, he married a girl, trying to do the right thing, and when they mutually end it, he comes out. One day his ex asks him to bring her a foot- locker from his storage unit, which he delivers to her in the old neighborhood.  This is not something he is really comfortable with and when he leaves, she insists that he get a ride back to the subway. It turns out to be Bobby Gugino, handsome Italian guy – straight Italian guy as far as Jody knows, that gives him the ride. Jody always had a bit of a crush on Bobby but it wasn’t something he could pursue. Straight guy with long-term girlfriend. Just no, but they hit it off and have a good conversation. Jody thinks this is it, thanks him for the ride and leaves.
Jody works in his mother’s book store and loves reading romance. When Bobby finds out where he works, he just happens to start coming in for some super sweet Frappuccinos and stopping to talk to Jody.  If Jody didn’t know better, he might think Bobby had more than casual friends on his mind. Bobby just might be right, but does Jody want to get involved with someone who isn’t ready to commit?
This was such a sweet story.  Jody is looking for Prince Charming, but so far he has only found the frogs, Bobby is sowing his wild gay oats after being in the closet for the better part of his life, but there is something about Jody he just can’t shake.  They have more in common than they realize at first and I loved the way the relationship builds and draws back then becomes stronger.  The secondary characters of Jody’s cougar mom and Bobby’s loyal brother are great.   They truly supported the main characters and were fun to read.  If you are looking for a sweet, sexy, romance, I recommend this book.

Erik is an EMT, he is a dad, he is responsible, and accepts that there are things he has to do and things he may not be able to do, but that is ok.  He lives on the lake and is content, then one day a large shadow appears over him.  This is Will. He is staying in his uncles cabin before he goes back for another tour overseas and wanted to stop and say hello.  The men hit it off and a friendship begins, and maybe there will be something more. Time will tell.
I enjoyed the main characters, the background on the men is great for such a short story, it is sweet, and sad and there is a slight jump in the story that leads us to our HEA, although it was not the HEA I was expecting. I was pretty sure where we were heading there but it didn’t matter, this story packs a lot of emotion into few words and I enjoyed it very much.

Angel Martinez – Fairytales and Mythology

I am so incredibly behind on reviews.  I decided that with the limited time I have had this year, that I would read and review later.  It has not worked out well for me as far as getting reviews written but I Have read a lot of great books.

I have told this story before but I will share it again.  I first heard Angel Martinez at GRL in Atlanta a couple of years ago.  One of the features they have is Author readings.  Angel read from her yet to be published book, Rarely Pure and Never Simple. I was hooked.  When the book came out I read it then searched for more.  I was not disappointed.  She writes Science Fiction, some light, some more serious, has paranormal, well, her  home page states “Space, Altered Humans, Gods, SF Humor, Fae, Spots of Dark, Tilted Fairytales and Futuristic Imaginings.

Angel Martinez Logo

This blog post covers her Tilted Fairytales and Gods – well Greek ones and a few others thrown into the mix too.

I will start with Boots.

Boots by Angel Martinez Blurb:

Willem’s father never approved of his artistic talents, his choices in life, or the fact that he’s gay. When the only thing Horst leaves to his son is the family cat, Willem thinks it’s his father’s last insult from the grave. That is, until the cat starts talking to him.
Though Willem’s lost his boyfriend, his home, and his job, Kasha, who claims to be a magic cat, reassures him that all will be well. All he needs is Willem’s trust and a good pair of boots. But giving boots to a talking cat has unexpected consequences when odd events ambush Willem at every turn, such as the appearance of a handsome stranger in his arms at night.
While Willem begins to suspect Kasha’s plans might be dangerous for all involved, how can he distrust such a charming kitty in cowboy boots?

Review:  I admit that I am not as familiar with the Puss in Boots fairytale as maybe I should be.  I am sure it was read to me as a child and of course there was Shrek. lol.  When I saw that Angel Martinez had taken this and gave it her own special flavor, I knew I had to read it.

Willem is a sweet artistic man at a very low point in his life when we meet him in the story. He has lost so much, his home, his father, his job and had his heart broken by his cheating lover.  When he inherits Puss, he finds out that he is not just the family cat.  Pasha (aka Puss) tells Willem to bring him boots and a hat.  Willem does this, not understanding the significance of the act.  From here, Ms Martinez weaves a lovely fantasy tale filled with hope and love, mixed with regrets for past mistakes, sacrifices, and redemption. This is definitely not a children’s fairytale and I enjoyed way the cat demon/human shape shifting  was portrayed.  This was fun, sweet and sexy.  There is a wonderful, more in depth review by one of my favorite author/reviewers, T.A. Webb on Goodreads.   You can find it here: Goodreads-Review-Button

Next up is her Brandywine Investigations series

I stumbled on this series in the middle. The second entry into the series, No Enemy But Time (Brandywine Investigastions #2) was a part of the Goodreads MM romance Groups Love’s Landscapes series, a free read.

No Enemy But Time by Angel Martinez  Blurb: Zagreus (Zack), the son of Hades, and his former guardian angel, Michael, live a quiet life of gardening, animal rescue, and playful sexual experimentation. They have a house near the beach, family close by and each other. This should be the happily ever after of every god’s dreams.

But lately, strange misgivings have plagued Zack, a sense of something dark and powerful approaching. Since he can’t pin down a source, he dismisses his instincts. Why borrow trouble? That is, until Michael begins to have strange mood swings and a dark stranger appears in the garden one night. Zack will need to battle time itself or lose both his hard-won peace and the love of his immortal life.

Review: This review was written for the blog on September 2, 2014

I always enjoy the “Don’t Read in the Closet” events that the Goodreads M/M Romance Group hosts every year. This year’s theme is Love’s Landscapes. I have found many new authors through these events and it is fun to get free short stories from some of my favorite authors too.

Which brings me to No Enemy But Time by Angel Martinez. I am a fan of Angel’s writing. She writes M/M sci-fi and fantasy. She can be light and humorous or deliciously dark. This story is a little mix of both. Zack and Michael have been together a while, a committed couple, very much in love. Michael is an angel that fell when he fell in love with Zack (Zagreus), son of Hades. It seems that many fallen angels succumb to a darker side over time. The love between Michael and Zack has been strong enough to keep him stable so far, but Zack notices changes in his lover and is worried but dismisses it. The first part of the book really gives the reader a feel for the depth of love these two have for one another. There is also a very erotic scene between them (something I had not read about before) that I thought was well written and portrayed the love and trust between them.

That said, this is not an easy story. When someone we love is going through something that we would rather believe is not happening, sometimes we hesitate to take action. In No Enemy But Time we can see this happening and matters become much worse before Zack realizes he must act to save Michael. There are heart-wrenching scenes and I felt the ending was not exactly happy, but hopeful. I read this story without reading Ms Martinez’s Canines, Crosshairs And Corpses, Book # 1 in the Brandywine Investigations universe. It is now on my tbr list and I am hoping we get more of Zack and Michael’s story too.

So, I read Canines, Crosshairs and Corpses (Brandywine Investigations #1).  It does not have Zack and Michael but we get Hades, Charon and Tiberius.

CaninesCrosshairs  Blurb: What’s a Lord of the Dead to do? Hades’ bride of several thousand years has served him with divorce papers and she doesn’t just want him out of her life, she wants the palace and the dog, too. Hades’ nephews and his faithful ferryman, Charon, are determined to find their uncle something to distract him before he expires of brooding misery.

Tiberius Snyder had a good future, until his mother dies and his employer shuts down. When he finds himself alone with nowhere to live, he turns to panhandling and to drink, depression slowly killing him.

Review: This one is much lighter than No Enemy But Time.  We are still mixing Greek mythology with contemporary settings and it works wonderfully.   Imagine Dionysus, Hermes and Orpheus in a band.  Good start right, but that is minor. They find their Uncle Hades face down on one of the tables in the club.  It becomes clear why their Uncle is in the shape he is in when they retrieve divorce papers from under his passed out body. Not just divorcing him but taking the palace and his dog , Cerberus. This is just cruel. Like the good nephews they are, they take him home and then set out to find him a place to live and something to do to get his life back on track. Thus Brandywine Investigations is born.

I absolutely adored this story. Hades is so out of touch with the modern world and it is so much fun watching him discover things like the internet, laptops, sports cars.  His best friend Charon is hands down my favorite character.  He has embraced the modern world, owns a funeral parlor (how fitting), and has a delightfully dry wit.
While investigating a series of deaths, they discover a young man in an alley where a shooting has just occurred. Not wanting to leave him to be falsely accused of the crime, Hades decides to take him home with him instead.  Tiberius Snyder is a young man down on his luck.  Homeless, depressed and drinking himself to death. He brings out feeling in Hades that Hades did not know he could feel.  It takes Ti a while to believe that Hades and Charon are who they say they are (and wouldn’t have known who they were if Hades didn’t keep slipping up on his identity :-). As they search for the killer the attraction between Hades and Ti grows.
The story has a mystery, a wonderful cast of characters and just the right amount of romance. It is a fun entertaining book and I have added it to my favorite reads list.

Review:
Even if I were not an Angel Martinez fan, I would be drawn to this book because of the dragon.  In this book, Hermes is having very valuable jewelry stolen form his stores. No easy feat when you consider he is the god of thieves, messengers and commerce and would have the best security available.  When it continues to happen, he joins forces with his family and they set a trap for the burglar.

Hermes is shocked and intrigues to find that it is a dragon.  He tracks him to his penthouse and  set up a meeting with him. What he finds is not what he expects.  He meets Fafnir B Dreki. An author and illustrator of children’s books.  Fafnir is grumpy, suspicious and  As Hermes speaks with Fafnir he senses something is not as it should be in the dragons home.
From here the story moves into a mystery with quarreling deities and evil plans.  We also revisit Michael and Zack and get to see how Michael is coping.  There is a lot happening in this book and a large cast of characters.  It is fun and fast paced.  The humor was different from the first book and not as dark as the second book.  I admit I am not as enamored of Hermes (it’s just me) but Fafnir is a wonderful character (not just because he is a dragon – but that helps).  He is grumpy, likeable and surprisingly vulnerable for a dragon. When I was finished reading the book, I wanted to know when we would be getting to read Fanir’s children’s series about Captain Calico. (You have to read the book) 😉
Overall, I enjoyed this entry in the Brandywine Investigations series and I am looking forward to Dionysus book.

While the cell is sparse and cold, at least this one has a bed. The figure resting there is too thin; too still, the prominent bones the result of long starvation, the stillness the product of too much anguish and abuse. He watches, though.
